Our approach

At Hearts with Soles, we are committed to fostering a healthier, more empathetic future for our children. Our mission goes beyond providing new sneakers to children in need, including those facing homelessness and in foster care. We aim to address the root causes of bullying and violence by teaching emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and mindfulness.

What We Aim to Accomplish

Teaching Emotional Intelligence:

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage our emotions and those of others. By teaching children to recognize and navigate their feelings, we help them build better relationships and develop resilience against bullying and other negative behaviors.

Fostering Self-Awareness:

Self-awareness involves understanding one’s emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and values. We believe that when children are more aware of their own feelings and reactions, they can make more conscious decisions, reducing impulsive and aggressive behaviors.

Promoting Mindfulness:

Mindfulness teaches children to be present in the moment and to approach their experiences with curiosity and non-judgment. This practice helps reduce stress and anxiety, leading to a decrease in violent and aggressive behaviors.

The Impact We Strive For

Decrease in Aggressive and Violent Behavior:

Our programs aim to reduce the prevalence of aggressive and violent behavior among children and young adults. This includes:

– Domestic Violence: By teaching empathy and emotional regulation, we hope to break the cycle of violence that can begin in childhood and extend into adulthood.

– Sexual Abuse: Through promoting respect and self-awareness, we seek to prevent harmful behaviors that lead to abuse.

– Bullying: Our focus on emotional intelligence and mindfulness helps create a more inclusive and supportive environment, and reducing incidents of bullying.

Understanding Violent Behavior

Violent behavior in children and adolescents can manifest in many ways, including:

– Explosive Temper Tantrums: Sudden outbursts of anger that are disproportionate to the situation.

– Physical Aggression: Acts of hitting, kicking, or otherwise physically harming others.

– Fighting: Engaging in physical altercations with peers.

– Threats or Attempts to Hurt Others: Verbal or physical threats aimed at causing fear or harm.

– Use of Weapons: Bringing and using weapons in conflicts.

– Cruelty Toward Animals: Intentional harm inflicted on animals.

– Fire Setting: Deliberate starting of fires.

– Intentional Destruction of Property and Vandalism: Acts of breaking, defacing, or otherwise damaging property.

These behaviors not only harm others but also negatively impact the perpetrators, leading to long-term consequences in their personal and social lives.
